At Bayview Community Preschool, we believe that learning through play is essential to children’s well being. Play is both fun and empowering, providing spontaneous hands-on stimulating, relaxing, comforting and challenging opportunities. We offer an unhurried environment with meaningful and authentic experiences.
Our connection with the natural world is integral to our work. Children naturally want to play outside and find peace, inspiration and beauty in nature. Having the opportunity to explore Jericho Beach through all seasons, will naturally inspire a respect for the woodland critters and creatures around them. A deep connection to nature is critical in developing lifelong respectful, positive attitudes to our environment and to ensuring a more sustainable future.
Respectful relationships between children, educators and families are central to the way we communicate with and value one another. We support and develop a partnership with families to share the nurturing and education of their children. We see families as their child’s first teacher and welcome their interest and involvement in our programs. We believe that each child, family and educator is unique and we honour diversity and celebrate differences in all aspects of our community.
We believe that building a sense of belonging between the community, children and educators is an integral part of our curriculum. When we feel as though we belong to a community, it optimises our social and emotional learning abilities. We believe in building a community where children are visible, valued and respected.
We believe that with positive supportive guidance, and within fair limits, all children can develop autonomy, integrity, self-regulation and responsibility.

Each week we meet, at Jericho Beach, (the end of Point Grey Rd) at the awesome Oak tree. Here the children learn to build shelters, tie knots, climb, explore and play in natures natural playground which provides a setting for natural play in the invigorating fresh air. Children are delighted to sing nature songs, create eco art and learn about the vegetation and animals that surround them. Rain or shine, we dress for all weather.
Children wear muddy buddies or rain pants and rain boots. Extra sweater and socks come with them as well as a snack and water.
Parents will drop off their child and pick them at the Oak tree at the end of Point Grey Rd beside the parking lot by the concession stand.
Research has shown that a child’s sense of creativity, confidence, independence and tolerance thrives naturally in an outdoor setting. Free, non-associated play differs from what children do indoors. This type of free play has been found to develop children’s motor skills and allows them to make decisions and solve problems, thanks to the more variable and less-structures outdoor environment.
Children bond over shared experiences such as finding slugs and worms or checking out the many homes and habitats of the local animals, bugs and various birds.
Bayview Nature Program meets at Jericho Beach, by the Big Oak Tree, at the east end of Jericho Beach (Google Maps) and runs for 2.5 hours every morning, Monday-Friday (9 AM – 12 PM), and again in the afternoons, 12:15 PM -2:45 PM (Monday & Wednesday), and 1 PM – 3:30 PM (Tuesday & Thursday)
