Our licensed preschool is a well-loved and deeply rooted Reggio-inspired centre celebrating over 50 years of inspiration.
At VCSC, education is an enriching experience. Our core values prioritize play as essential to the authentic development of children. We offer an innovative and fun loving learning environment dedicated to child focused exploration, creativity and collaboration. Our school is an inclusive and vibrant place where children, parents, teachers and the community grow together as partners in learning. VCSC is a joyful and inspiring space where meaningful relationships flourish.
Our preschool classes have a maximum of 18 children and 3 experienced teachers, resulting in a 1:6 ratio. Our two-year-old Anchor program classes have a maximum 9 children and 2 teachers, resulting in a ratio of at least 1:4.5.
Our Reggio-inspired philosophy
VCSC programs are inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. This educational approach values the image of the child as curious, resilient and competent; rich with wonder and knowledge. The image of the child is at the heart of our play-based curriculum where children and teachers discover and explore together. Our teachers support the children's ideas and foster their intellectual development with an emphasis on play as the means for learning. These learning experiences are made visible with documentation. Thoughts, dialogue, photographs and creations are displayed to invite conversations, to reflect on our experiences and to promote the work of the children. Our classroom is a creative and collaborative learning environment thoughtfully crafted to support and respect the interests of the children.

This truly unique program for toddlers (2 year olds and those turning 2 by December 31) and their parents grew out of an in-depth pilot study conducted in the 1980s at the University of British Columbia. Research results have confirmed the direct relationship between parent involvement in their children’s education and the level of child development and educational success. The program name Addressing the Needs of Children through Observation and Response, ANCHOR, is not only relevant as it describes a context for parents and educators to act and interact in authentic and meaningful ways, but also because it alludes to how the program anchors the way parents frame their relationship with their children’s education.
While two teachers engage with the children, parents observe their children via video transmission in an adjacent room with our parent facilitator. Through observation and discussion, parents build shared understandings of different learning journeys as they embrace multiple perspectives and ways of knowing. The Anchor program provides an opportunity for parents to gain insight into how a Reggio-inspired program can enrich the experience of raising and nurturing a young child, and connect with other families in a supportive and informative environment that transform into community.

Our preschool program consists of mixed-age classes of kids who range from 3 years old (or those turning 3 by December 31) to school aged (turning 5). The curriculum, based on the Reggio Emilia approach, involves activities in all areas of development, including art, music, science, mathematics and early literacy. We take pride in offering a secure and stimulating environment where all children can thrive both creatively and socially.
We have daily active play and encourage children’s innate love of nature. Our onsite playground was custom-built for preschool aged children.
Our programs follow the Vancouver School Board schedule and run September through June.
